Discover McKinney’s Tiny Doors—a whimsical art scavenger hunt with 75+ hidden doors downtown. Perfect family fun in Historic McKinney!
One of the things I love most about living in McKinney is that even though our city is growing, it still feels like a small town at heart. Neighbors wave when they pass by, local shop owners remember your name, and the square is always buzzing with festivals, live music, and street dances. From Christmas on the Square to Oktoberfest, there’s always something to gather the community together.
Last year, I heard whispers about something magical—McKinney’s Tiny Doors. Naturally, my kids and I decided to go on a hunt. We grabbed some snacks, parked downtown, and let the boys lead the way. They loved peeking around corners and spotting the little doors tucked into unexpected places. Each time we found one, they would spin a story about who might live inside—a fairy, a mouse, maybe even a superhero in hiding. Watching their imaginations come alive made the whole adventure even more special.
The Tiny Doors are part of a public art installation created by McKinney Main Street, local artists, and Visit McKinney. With over 75 unique doors scattered throughout the Downtown Cultural District (and even a few across Highway 5 at the Flour Mill), it’s like a real-life scavenger hunt for families, visitors, and locals alike.
One of the artists leading the project is Beth Fields, lovingly known as the “Door Lady of McKinney.” Beth has always been fascinated by doors—collecting photos of doorknobs, studying historic architecture, and weaving those inspirations into her artwork. Her whimsical designs help make this project such a delightful experience for all of us who get to explore it.
If you want to try your own Tiny Door adventure, McKinney has made it easy. You can download the McKinney TX app on your phone, click on “Tours,” and find the McKinney Tiny Doors map. Or, if you’d rather, you can explore the tour right from your computer. Either way, it’s a fun and free way to see downtown in a whole new way.
Just a heads up—sometimes a few doors are temporarily missing for repairs, but that only adds to the fun of coming back again to see what’s new.
So next time you’re in downtown McKinney, take a stroll, grab a coffee, and keep your eyes open. You never know what little door you might discover—or what stories your kids will dream up about who lives inside.
